Welcome to Northview Middle School’s Exploring Engineering & Design - 7th Grade

Hello, my name is Heidi Harvey, I am excited about joining the CTE  department of Northview Middle School and honored to teach your child this semester.

Course Description and Outline

Purpose of Course :  Exploring Engineering & Design prepares students with opportunities to apply the design process in the invention or innovation of a new product, process, or system. Students learn all about invention and innovation.. They learn about the core concepts of

technology and about the various approaches to solving problems, including engineering design and experimentation.

Student Responsibilities

Students will be using Canvas Learning System for this class.

  • Effectively access Powerschool, Canvas and Google Drive & Pitsco
  • Turn in assignments &  blog post on time using the Canvas.
  • Pass the Safety Test with 70% proficiency before allowed to utilize the tools, technology, or design equipment.
  • Follow classroom rules & procedures in Technology class.
  • Follow Code of Cooperation during Modules
  • Manage time to accomplish goals individually and during Synergy Modules.
  • Participate in all classroom activities, there will no homework for this class, but quizzes and test may need review at home.
  • Bring Chromebook charged each day when not completing a module.



Classroom Rules

  • Respect yourself, your peers, and your teacher.

  • Follow directions the first time they are given.
  • Follow Lab Safety guidelines at ALL times.
  • Use appropriate websites to complete daily tasks.
  • No food, drinks, candy, or gum in computer lab.





Consequences

Negative Consequences:

  • Warning and redirect
  • Mark on Behavior Card with consequences listed.
  • Relocation within classroom or to another room.  Minor Incident report made and Call/Email to parents.
  • Office Referral made with administration deciding consequences.
  • Inability to work on Modules or lower grade

Positive Consequences:

  • Increased knowledge and Good Grades
  • Pride in yourself          
  • Praise & Hot Tickets
  • More opportunities for more Discover Days (STEAM activities)

Grading

Northview follows the 10 point grading scale set by North Carolina

      Breakdown of Grading in 7th Grade Technology Class

  • Modules - 40%   
  • Classwork/Projects: 20%
  • Quiz- 20%
  • Test - 20%

 

Late Work & Make Up Policy

Class work:

  • Modules: If student is absent they will continue with the next day of activities and must complete the missed activity before next module begins for full credit.
  • If absent for 1 day of regular classwork,  the student is responsible for submitting completed work, with a 1  day grace period, for full credit.
  • Excused absences, students are still responsible for completing assignments within the given grace period.
  • Quizzes and Tests must be made up within 3 days after returning from absence & before starting a new Module.

 

Code of Cooperation

 

  • BE KIND: Treat everyone with respect and kindness.
  • SHARE:  Share the use of the computer and the Module equipment (Rotate out who drives the mouse each day)
  • DO YOUR PART:  Equally divide the amount of work to be done
  • KEEP IT CLEAN:  Keep everything in the lab clean and in good working condition.
