Course Description:   Chemistry is a course that focuses on the structure of atoms, structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, conservation of energy and matter, and the interaction of energy and matter.  The Honors Chemistry class differs from the Chemistry-CP class in the depth of the coverage of material. Two formal lab reports and a chemistry electronic portfolio (on Canvas) are required for honors credit.

Office Hours: SMART lunch Thursday (A) is reserved for Chemistry students; 2:45 - 3:30 pm Tues, Wed afternoon; Other times by appointment

Web Pages:   To make full use of content available for students, many internet sites will be utilized.  The following two sites will be used extensively and will serve as a portal to all other resources

Required Texts/Materials:

Chemistry  2005 edition:  Primary Textbook (online version available)

  • Composition books (2) for interactive learning log
  • Pens (blue or black only) and pencils with erasers
  • $10 science fee

Suggested Materials:

  • notebook paper, graph paper, colored pencils, highlighter
  • tape, scissors, construction paper/scrap-booking paper for ILL
  • Calculator – graphing or scientific (phones are NOT substitutes for calculators in this class)
  • computer, tablet, SMART phone for Internet connectivity

Class Expectations

  • Be present - you could lose credit for the course if you have excessive, unexcused absences.  
  • Be on time - school policies for tardies are clearly outlined in your HHS handbook
  • Food/drink - ONLY colorless bottled water is allowed in class/lab.  N
  • Have class materials ready at beginning of class
  • Demonstrate acceptable work ethic/behavior
  • Use electronic devices appropriately - when not in use for class activity, they should be dark and silent.
  • ALL school rules must be followed…no exceptions!  This includes dress code, cell phones and electronic devices.  
  • Book bags/large items MUST be placed under your chair if they are brought to class.
  • Social Contract is expected to be followed and monitored by all students and the teacher as outlined in class.
  • The honor code is STRICTLY adhered to in this course.  
  • Bathroom breaks are handed out at the beginning of each nine weeks as per school policy.  

Consequences:

1st infraction of any type:  Warning and conference with student

2nd infraction of any type:   Conference with student and phone call home to parents/possible administration involvement.

3rd  or greater infraction of any type:  administration involvement

Grading policies

Formal Assessments 70%:  This category includes lab work, projects, announced quizzes, and tests.  You have one week to make up tests.  No tests can be made up past this deadline, unless extenuating circumstances have been documented.

Homework/Classwork: 20%  Homework/Classwork is due at the beginning of class, but will be taken up/ graded at the leisure of the teacher.  Homework is for YOU not your teacher.  No late work is accepted in this arena.  

Classroom Indicators 10%-  Students will be assessed weekly on the following 7 standards on a 0-2 scale for each

  • CI 1.1 Student is prepared and follows class routine
  • CI 1.2 Student is focused and respects class time
  • CI1.3 Student uses electronic devices appropriately and at appropriate times
  • CI 2.2 Student completed assignments in a timely manner
  • CI 2.1 All assignments are completed in a thoughtful manner
  • CI 3.1 Student shows respect to individuals and property
  • CI 3.2 Student follows school and class policies

Miscellaneous grading Policies-

  • You are responsible for knowing everything in the syllabus.
  • I reserve the right to amend it if I need to. If I do, you will all be notified immediately.
  • It is your responsibility to learn CANVAS well enough to take quizzes and submit assignments. If I cannot open what you submit, I cannot grade it, which could result in a zero.
  • Test corrections can be completed for any test within 5 days of test return
    • should you complete corrections, the minimum score recorded in PowerSchool will be 50
    • up to 10 points can be earned by test corrections for students not affected by min. score policy
    • no more than 100 can be earned on any test
  • Work submitted must be YOUR OWN.  Cite any external sources used. Plagiarism is not tolerated.
  • No extra credit will be awarded as students can complete test corrections and reassess their SBG at SMART lunch.
