Course of Study: Welcome to Honors Chemistry.  The physical sciences are a study of matter and energy. Chemistry involves the study of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter. A major portion of the course will deal with the periodic table and learning to use it as a tool. We will study these areas through lecture, hands-on activities, labs, and other instructional methods.

Topics covered:

  • History of the Atom
  • Types, Properties, and Structure of Matter
  • Chemical Formulas, Chemical Bonds, Chemical Equations and Interactions
  • Subatomic Particles
  • Repulsive and Attractive Forces
  • Electron Configurations, Electron Notations and Quantum Numbers
  • Understanding the relationship between pressure, temperature, and volume
  • Understanding the periodic table and how it is used in chemistry
  • Thermodynamic relationships
  • Solutions and equilibrium

In order to excel, students need self-motivation and a strong work ethic.  Students should expect reading homework where needed in the unit and are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the reading in detail. Class time is devoted to student-generated discussion of the reading, not teacher “explanation” of the text

Textbook: Chemistry

Grading System:

  (A) 100-90

                               (B)  89-80

                               (C)  79-70

                               (D)  69-60

                               (F)   Below 60

*Projects and Labs will be assigned accordingly and where deemed necessary to enhance student learning.

Department Grading Policy:

 Tests/Projects                                 35%

 Quizzes                                            15%

 Class work/Homework                     25%

 Labs                                                 25%

Materials:

  1. Notebook – 3-ring binder is best.  No more than 1 ½ in size.  5 dividers
  2. Paper
  3. Pencil
  4. Pen-black/blue
  5. Colored pencils if you do not to use the class “shared” box.

Late Work:

Late work WILL be accepted! You have 5 days past the due date to turn in work, anything past the five day period will be graded at no higher than a 60. If there are extenuating circumstances, such as illness or death in the family, you can speak with me individually.

IMPROVING GRADES:

On tests students have the opportunity to do rewrites to bring up a grade. I will explain the policy in detail when the moment presents itself.

Other things that can affect your grade:

  1. Cheating on a test will result in a grade of “0”. Cheating on homework or class work will result in a deduction of 60 points. The school discipline policy will be enforced.
  2. If you do not participate in activities, expect to receive a bad grade.
  3. Absences and tardies may effect your grade, (review the school attendance policy). It is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed during their absence. Any missed work, including tests and quizzes, must be made up within 5 days of returning to school. All absences over 3 per 9 weeks must be made up as well.

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Strive to succeed every day!
  2. Be on time!
  3. When the bell rings all talking stops!
  4. If a warm up activity is on the board you must complete it.
  5. Use the restroom before or after class.
  6. Respect yourself and the others around you.
  7. Be in your seat and prepared for class when the bell rings.
  8. NO CELL PHONES OR EAR BUDS.
  9. Dismissal will be by the teacher-NOT the bell.

*No food or drink.

**Every student has the right to succeed in a classroom conducive to learning

School RulesAll School Rules will be enforced in the classroom.  Failure to comply with these rules may result in a call home and/or an office referral.

Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices:  The HHS cell phone and electronic device policy will be strictly enforced in the classroom.

Honor Code: All assignments are given with the understanding that each individual will complete that assignment in an honest manner.  Anyone caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive an automatic grade of “0” for that particular assignment.  Actions in terms of discipline will be assessed individually.  Group Work means just that – everyone in the group contributes, and all group members are responsible for understanding the information.  This mindset also applies to Partner Work

NOTE:  Ultimately, each student is responsible for their portion of the work and will be graded on that rubric of completion.  NO student will be penalized because others did not complete their part of the work assignment. Don’t panic! If you work hard in class, do your own work, and study, then you should have no
